Understanding The Concept Of Acoustical Design

Do you wonder what it would be like if you’d have the chance to work in a room which has complete silence, where you can reach the peak of concentration? Well, this concept lies in acoustical designs. The noise travel from one place to another is affected by the concept of acoustical design. Acoustic is the science of sound.

Acoustic designs deal with sound absorption, vibrations, and reverberations in a particular room. In order to give priority to the important sound, the background noise is expected to be way less so that there is no interruption while listening to the priority sound.

Acoustics have a large impact on multiple factors like health, mindset, productivity, concentration, and positivity which is why the building of acoustics plays a very important role in the design and construction of buildings and rooms.

Acoustical designs are based on the following factors:

  • Reverberation- Depending on the intensity of the sound that is required, reverberation varies.
  • For a room where you want a clear sound without any other disturbance, the background noise must be lesser than the speech sound. This is done by aiming for lower reverberation time.
  • For a concrete hall such as a theatre where you want the sound to be deep, higher reverberation time is expected.
  • For a private room, where confidentiality is demanded, the background noise is expected to be more than the speech sound so that the conversation doesn’t pass through from one room to another.
  • Echelon effect- The process of the combination of multiple echoes to form a different sound is said to be the Echelon effect. Any set of panels or railing can help produce this effect. This helps in changing the quality of the delivered sound.
  • Focusing and Interference- Depending on the surface, the sound quality differs based on whether it is concave or convex.
  • Air and structure bore noise- Unwanted noise is produced by the air entering the loosely closed windows or doors. This should be avoided when excellent speech quality is demanded.

Depending on the type of sound environment you want, the construction of that area should be done very critically. Every room acoustic depends on the geometry and layout of the room and also the acoustical absorption.

The sound that reaches the human ear is dependent on direct and indirect sounds. Direct is the one received from the speaker. Indirect is the one that is received after the reflection, refraction, transmission, and absorption of the sound wave.

Material selection for a room is very important in regards to the quality and intensity of sound that is desired. The volume, shape, height, and interior planning are also taken into consideration.

Bottom Line

Acoustical design is a branch of science that allows us to have a complete hold on the delivery of sound. It has gained huge popularity because of its astonishing qualities. The main property on which it depends is the sound to noise ratio. This ratio can be altered by using specific materials to enjoy high to low intensities of sound.
